Part of a series of monthly programs. The study of automatism has led to some of the most fascinating objects in our collections. Join us for an informal afternoon exploring our holdings of spirit and automatic drawings, images made by practitioners who believed that bypassing the conscious mind could reveal something deeper.
We’ll look at these works together, and ask a question that researchers, artists, and psychologists have all approached from different directions: what happens when we stop thinking and just let the hand move?
Afterward, you’re invited to try it yourself — no artistic experience necessary.
